Yes. We do. But also… it’s not usually what we’d push first.
Super 8 is very cool and if you’ve got your heart set on that little whirring cartridge look, tell us and we’ll sort it. Fair warning though — it’s an add-on, it costs extra because the film and the developing aren’t cheap, you only get about three and a half minutes of footage from it and there’s no sound. We’re not trying to talk you out of it. We just want you to know what you’re buying before you commit.
What we actually get super excited about is the old hand-me-round old school handicam. It’s not fancy. Anyone can grab it. Best hour for it is usually canapé hour — people drinking in the sun, that bit of the day you don’t get to see as much of if you’re out on your photoshoot. Guests leave messages, dad jokes, soft little love notes… and sometimes they go completely off-script.
Like the time we plugged the handicam in later and discovered the guests had secretly made a full Blair Witch–style horror film during canapés. No rules. No brief. Just a little camera and mates who had a laugh. Shaun only added the soundtrack. They did the rest. We still lose it every time we watch it and think you will too:
That’s the kind of thing you can’t buy with three silent minutes of film stock. It’s cheaper, it’s loads of fun, and if it’s really the Super 8 ‘look’ you’re after, then it’s easy to tweak the handicam footage so it looks almost identical — without the time limit.
So yes — we do Super 8. We just get more excited when the silly little handicam turns your canapé hour into something you’ll still be laughing about years later.
