Before you ask… we don’t do photography.
Not as an add-on. Not as a “while we’re here” job. We make films. That is our job — but more importantly, that is our passion and that is our skill.
Half the industry will sell you photo and film as a neat little package, and they’ll sell it as just that: neat. “One team. One inbox. One conversation. Very tidy. Less hassle”… and a great sales pitch. But also complete bullshit. It’s simply a way to double their income without the extra admin of a second wedding to plan or a second day to work.
The other sales pitch you might hear is, “Well, if you want to make sure that your photographer and videographer get along on your day then you should book a combo team with the one company.” Honestly, that should serve as a major red flag. If getting along only works inside one company, that’s a problem — not a solution. We are consistently recommended by photographers, venues, coordinators and most importantly our past couples because we’re easy to work alongside, reliable, prioritise doing a brilliant job for you, and stay respectful to everyone else working hard on your day. Just like all your ‘vendors’ should.
But the way we see it: when both crafts live under the same roof, one of them almost always becomes the afterthought. And there is no universe where we’d want your film (or your photos) to be an afterthought.
A good photographer and a good filmmaker are watching two different days. One is hunting for the still you will hang on the wall — light, shape, a moment frozen. The other is listening as much as looking: the pause before someone speaks, the laugh that runs longer than planned, the audio you will rewind to hear again on a quiet Thursday years from now.
We used to flirt with offering both, years ago. Everyone else was doing it so we felt the need to “compete.” Then we grew up and remembered what we actually like doing, what we’re good at, and that professional integrity should sit in front of the bottom dollar — not behind it.
Shaun’s day is reading the room and being in the right spot when something happens. That’s a whole job — and it’s his superpower. Watch the photo/film combo teams and notice how often the film is just a motion version of the same stills: bridal portraits, everyone posed and staring down the barrel. That should not make your video. It would never make ours.
Stills are beautiful and important. We just don’t want to be the people holding that camera. If you’re still looking for a photographer, tell us.
